So verbreitet das Phänomen ist, so rar sind die Erkenntnisse über seine Ursachen. Bislang machen die meisten Erklärungsansätze kulturelle, religiöse oder psychologische Faktoren für die Störung der weiblichen Orgasmusfähigkeit verantwortlich - der Rolle des Partners wurde indes erstaunlicherweise weit weniger Einfluss zugeschrieben. Britische Forscher rollten das Feld nun von einer ganz anderen Seite auf und stießen dabei auf eine neue Frage: "Gen`s" oder "Gen`s" nicht?

Die Wissenschaftler um die Epidemiologin Kate Dunn nutzten die große britische Zwillingsdatenbank und verschickten an Tausende von ein- und zweieiigen weiblichen Zwillingspärchen zwischen 19 und 83 Jahren Fragebögen zu Sexualverhalten und sexueller Befriedigung. Die zahlreichen Antworten sprachen eine deutliche Sprache: Nur 14% der Frauen, die geantwortet hatten, gaben an, bei jedem Geschlechtsverkehr zum Orgasmus zu kommen, ein Viertel erreichte den Höhepunkt immerhin in drei von vier Fällen. Demgegenüber gab ein Drittel der Frauen an, nie oder nur selten einen Orgasmus zu erleben. Sogar bei der Selbstbefriedigung kommt jede fünfte Frau nicht zum Höhepunkt.

Dunn und ihre Kollegen stellten fest, dass die Antworten der eineiigen Zwillinge häufiger übereinstimmten als jene der zweieiigen und berechneten daraus einen genetischen Einfluss auf die Orgasmusfähigkeit der Frau. So ergab sich für den ausbleibenden Höhepunkt beim Geschlechtsverkehr ein Erblichkeitsanteil von 34%, für die Selbstbefriedigung sogar von 45%. Angesichts dieser beeindruckenden Zahlen sollte nun untersucht werden, auf welche Weise die Gene das sexuelle Erleben der Frau beeinflussen, um daraus auf mögliche Therapieoptionen schließen zu können. Da jedoch möglicherweise hunderte von Genen sowie andere unbekannte Faktoren beteiligt sind, ist eine derartige Behandlungsmöglichkeit sicher noch ferne Zukunftsmusik.
